New inventions created new businesses and helped improve everyday life. Many business leaders drove out competitors, forming monopolies and amassing great fortunes.
Between 1870 and 1900, the nation’s population doubled from fewer than 40 million to 76 million, largely because of immigration. But while the growing middle class enjoyed more leisure time, many workers and farmers struggled to make ends meet.
