“In your hands… and not in mine is the momentous issue of civil war.” With those words of warning to the leaders of the South, President Abraham Lincoln took the oath of office in 1861. Southerners insisted that slavery be allowed in new territories in the West; Lincoln and the Republican Party, while promising not to limit slavery where it existed, were firmly opposed to any extension. Eleven states, feeling they had been denied the right to make such decisions for themselves, refused to accept Lincoln’s presidency and seceded from the Union. In April 1861, America plunged into the Civil War. After four years of grim fighting, the North’s victory restored the Union; four million slaves were freed. A decade of rebuilding followed – a time of uncertainty and struggle known as Reconstruction.
